I work at a bike shop and get 2 years out of a floor pump with daily use. My air compressor inflator uses a Silca pump head, which is a slide-on, slide-off fit, and it probably gets 2 years per grommet with nonstop LBS use as well. So while I understand the idea of smooth stems being nicer to pump grommets, I think it's an academic point, considering how much use it takes to actually wear one out.

A 60 mm stem would extend way past those wheels and could cause problems in addition to looking bad.
What sort of problems would you expect it to cause? I do this for a living and it really doesn't cause problems. Aesthetics, I'll grant you that one. But having enough stem to comfortably accomodate a dual-mode floor pump chuck is better than the alternative. Where I work, our next size down is a 48mm and it wouldn't be a good match for that rim, from what I can tell from the photo.
