I just picked up this Giordana Scorpius for a sweet $40. Full Columbus SL tubing, Giordana branded lugs and dropouts, and no real rust or issues to speak of. But, the paint is in miserable condition. Big chunks of paint chipping on the rear of the seat post, on parts of the top tube, and various medium and smaller chips throughout.
So, first, would stripping this and having it powder coated be a crime here? I usually like to keep original paint, but this is pretty far gone.
Second, there seems to be some kind of clear coat over the chrome. I've never run into this before, but, it is my best explanation for these pock marks throughout the chrome that don't seem to actually be effecting the chrome itself. Has anyone seen this before? Anyone know how to get that clear coat off without hurting the chrome? Even if I do get a new powder coat, I'd like to save the chrome.
Lastly, anyone know what year this bike is or what components it originally came with? There is limited info out there, and I'm trying to decide what components would be a good match here. I'm thinking something a little off the beaten path, like Sante or Ofmega. Other suggestions?
