I will share with you what I believe helps getting good. There is no substitute for miles. I have ramped up my miles this year and riding better for it. Riding with fast guys will make you faster. As far as metrics go...if you can sustain 22 mph for 10 miles in still warm air you will be able to keep up with most but not all guys out there.
When I rode less and smarter (had a coach) I was much faster than I am now from just riding more.
