I thought just the opposite was true, that most people did do their own work. Perhaps that is because I do almost everything myself, except for wheel building.
For me, "good" is when I can do the sort of rides that I want to and keep up with a group. My initial goal was to get back to being able to do the sort of rides that I did when I was in my 20's (I'm 51 now), which I achieved earlier this year. Now working on achieving "better" which for me means doing some 100k + rides and keeping up with some of the faster kids in the club. That will take some more time.
