I do use Strava (not under my name) but do not Strava hunt - I, much like you, go by feel and then when I get back from a ride I will upload to see, for comparison how i fair against other p/1/2 in the area BUT I am not specifically going for KOM.
I don't care how I "do" relative to anybody when solo training. I'll look at my Strava output to see if I did what I was supposed to do for that day.
Dozens of times over the years I passed Phil Gaimon while training when I was on a hard day and he was on an easy day. No way am I anywhere near his level as a bike racer now or even when I was young.
