You can get American Classic cassette clips that fit inside Shimano 10sp cassettes. They spread the load on the freehub body and reduce the gouging.

I don't understand why Shimano would remove 1/3 of the splines from the middle cogs. There is no engineering or marketing reason I can see for it. It doesn't force people to buy DA hubs or cassettes though.
