Since you're replacing the shoes, nothing else needs to be done, but in the future sandpaper is fine for the rims, then ride and apply the breaks to burnish off all the loose aluminum particles. Finish by dressing the shoes with a file (never sandpaper) to bring up fresh grit free rubber.
