Okay, do you want a tire problem in some dark and scary part of NYC? Is that worth deferring a $30 purchase?
I lived in NYC for most of my life, and now live just outside. Of all places on earth NYC is the best place to get stranded with a bike. We have 24 hour mass transit, and bikes are welcome on the subways. (maybe not actually welcome, but you don't get thrown off either).

The reality is that with the glass and potholes, this tires life expectancy isn't that much lower than a new tire. It might even be longer because, based on experience) new tires seem to slash easier on glass, but if they make it a year or two, the UV and weathering harden the tread rubber, and their cut resistance increases.
