I would not call it a myth, the newer cables don't stretch like the old galvanized ones did. I think there probably was some compression of housings too. The modern cables stay in adjustment a lot longer than the old ones did. FWIW I was wrenching and racing back in the mid 70's and "cable stretch" was one thing we did have to adjust for.
