What he meant by 42 24 was 42 in the front and 24 biggest cog in the rear, which you already said was a 21.
If you buy this Trek you can stick a 39 on the front and at least a 25, maybe even a 28, on the back.
You never know what deals are out there, though. I sold a Cannondale CAAD 5 for $300 last year which was a screaming deal compared to that Trek.
