But mostly will be riding the bike in the park for a few hours on weekends. Can the 24 speed compete with a 27 speed road bike? at least to allow me to keep up

Should I get the trek because of its reputation for quality, lightness and durability and sacrifice a bit of speed?

thank you
p.s I only recently started riding again last year for about 2 days a week, so I am still a noob.
bhagi108...I have the FX 7.3 and it feels great and it is very light. I too wanted speed but have learned that the bike alone can't get you there. In other words you will eventually build up to it with your stamina to maintain the higher speeds. I have been able to get to 20 mph but maintaining it is the challenge. I started averaging 13 mph and now I average 15 -16 mph. Unfortunately, I am limited to riding 2 to 3 hours on the weekends. That has been enough to make a noticeable difference in my thighs. For the record I am 50 yrs old.

Having said that, a good road bike will be faster.
