I read a little blurb about this in a mag or online zine recently... maybe bicycling magazine?

Basically, it said that tipping a mechanic isn't required, and it will certainly not get your bike fixed any faster or anything... but that a cold six pack or a $20 bill occasionally is a nice gesture.
