But my needs may be different, the roads/sidewalks where I live are in shoddy condition.
I didn't realize this until after purchasing two road bikes and got heavy into commuting.
The bikes often advertised as "city bikes"--maybe great on nicely paved smoothed roads but the
constant bumps, dips, holes, uneven breaks where I live and travel---mehhh--it is very jarring on my body and nerves.
Therefore, my preference older steel frames from Craigslist.
The heavier the tank the better.

To me as long as it's not too much leaning forward as in drop bar, it'd be OK. Because I'll be carrying a heavy backpack and I think with drop bar bikes my back would hurt. With flat bar or hybrid, I can put the backpack on the rear rack or carry it in upright posture.
Yeah, you're right it's very important to choose the right first bike.
