The surface inside the STEERER TUBE, where the WEDGE goes, is smooth all the way around, so there's no problem with "grippy grooves" (WTF?). Careful how deep you put the stem into the tube, so it doesn't hit the frame when you turn. Be ready for some funky steering.
If you feel the need to do this, you either have the wrong SIZE bike, or the wrong TYPE of bike. (Or, maybe, you're just "unique".)
