It depends on one's needs.... working urban traffic, hills, headwinds/tailwinds, heavy cargo loads, all leading to having multiple gears in making my commutes much more enjoyable. Today's rapid index shifters are the ticket for urban commuting when compared to my early commuter days of friction shifters.
