Two 24 oz bottles full after every possible water stop. One 2 liter Platypus bladder has been enough
This setup has also served me well. My wife also caries the same, so we have 4 liters in reserve. We have ridden through eastern Oregon, southern Idaho, southern Wyoming, southern Portugal, and southern Spain ( in July) with only minor supplementing with a bottle or two of sports drinks in the front pannier. All very dry, hot areas. The empty Platypus only weighs a couple of ounces and take up very little space.
