Yeah as long as this is run friction you should be fine. How many speeds is the cassette? I find that anything above 7 starts to get a bit tricky.
I'm currently riding my bike with friction 8 speed the most. I tried it out with 9 and 10 speed but it was too tricky with the cogs so close together.
