Not owning a car has prevented me from applying for some jobs that were far away. I already live in a small city. I don't want to move to an even smaller city just to get a job within cycling distance. With a car I could drive twenty to thirty miles away to work. A few days earlier this winter I rode in minus 17-20 degrees. Work is just three miles away. I wouldn't do that if it were ten or more miles away. Super cold weather does cause problems for bicycle parts. If I broke down at least I could walk the remainder of the way without freezing to death.

My current employer for the summer requires reliable transportation. It didn't mention automobile. This is one of those don't ask don't tell situations. Any job listing that says must have a reliable vehicle means the same to me. My bicycle and motorized bicycle are reliable in my opinion.

I also think employers who expect people to own cars while paying them less than $2000 per month are just nuts. Many of the people with whom I work have pensions and are retired from their professions and just drive school buses to keep themselves busy. I think that much of their pay goes to paying for their cars. Several drive trucks. One guy has a Dodge Ram 3500 with a diesel motor. He drives to work and home twice per day. I think he works one and a half hours per day just to pay for fuel. I keep more money because I don't own a car.
