We have trains but the prices for walk-on tickets will make your eyes water if you've gone any distance. Depending on your route they can be tortuously slow as well.

I've got a friend who lives in another town about 35 miles from where I live (I live in London, the capital of England). Getting from my house to his house takes me about 50 minutes by car, 2 hours by bike, and by train I'd allow a good 2 hours (that includes time walking to and from stations and waiting for connections, but it's the total journey time that counts)

For good measure there appears to be no way of guaranteeing you'll be allowed to take a bike on any particular train - at least some train operators appear to reserve the right to refuse to carry a bicycle at any time, which doesn't help much if you're told you can't take your bike on the train, the next train is in an hour, and that means you'll miss your connection.

We don't really do joined up transport in the UK.
