You're quite right there Lorne! I always apply lateral thinking and file flats on each end of the spindle - takes a few seconds, just flatten the threads off. The remaining thread still works and so far I haven't broken one - it's not much metal to remove and it isn't exposed. Worst comes to worst and all I've lost is a spindle - the cones, locknuts etc. are still fine.
