I have a kickstand on my Giant Escape and wouldn't ever give it up. The bike is my transportation, I don't have a car, so I added lights, fenders, Wald 535 grocery baskets, water bottle bracket, mirror, and a U lock holder. Yeah it's heavy but it's damn convenient and easy to ride. I especially like that when I park and lock it up I don't have to lean it against the bike rack. We have the u shaped bike racks for one bike on each stand. I put down my kickstand and park the bike close enough that the Kryptonite will reach. Not having to lean the bike against the rack saves my paint from scratches.
