Of course the companies and many of the LBS, are more than willing to sell you the myth that you are in need professional level gear and equipment, but most of us don't - and those that know that we aren't getting competitive with our bikes like kick stands.

Back on topic:
Heck, I like a kickstand. I have a hybrid that I use for pleasure rides, commutes and the occasional grocery run on. I'm no racer, nor will I ever be one. It's nice to find a park bench and not have to find something to lean the bike against or lay the bike down.
