Hi folks, this is my first post to the Mountain Biking forum and thought that I would start by showing my "new to me" ride.
I spend most of my days riding road and touring bikes but do have a bit of an off-road biking background. In addition to the Kona, I have a '98 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR that I have owned since new. It now belongs to my wife and has been set up for and is being used as an "around town" bike. I couldn't really ask for it back so I started looking around for a used bike to do the trails, abandoned rail beds and such around here.
The Lava Dome is a '95-98 model and is equipped with fairly high end components for its day. The bike had spent a good portion of its life in Europe before finding itself neglected in a garage. Aside from needing a good cleaning and repacking of all the bearings, I had to replace the rear shifter cable, the cassette, the chain, the crankset and bottom bracket. Stuff that you would expect to replace on an old bike.
Nashbar was my friend. Sram provided the 12-32 7 speed cassette and chain. Nashbar provided the Shimano Altus crankset and free shipping for a grand total of 17$. While the Altus crankset would not normally be my first choice, you can't beat the price when putting an old bike on the road. I'll ride the bike for awhile and if I like the bike or break something in the drivetrain, I'll upgrade the bike to a 2 X something setup. I pulled the Deore XT pedals off my road bike and put them on the Kona. The road bike is now sporting a set of Shimano A520's.
This baby should do the job. If not, I'm sure there is a hardtail something or other waiting for me out there. N+1?
Pics of course.
