If your rims have rust on them, they must be steel and I would definitely replace them with aluminum. Your riding experience will definitely improve because your brakes will work as they should. I imagine that the Vuelta rims are deep vees and they will definitely look odd on a vintage bike. I'm 64 and I still have no trouble deciding what looks odd to me. I'd look for some more age appropriate wheels.
