Surley steamroller. It has solid entry level stuff(which is what you will get for a grand), and has great geometry for longer rides, and rougher roads.
I love my steamroller. They are bulletproof. Its well under budget, which leaves you cash to upgrade the tires, handlebars, etc. Plus, the fork is lugged for that timeless classic bike look.
