Pedals and shoes for clydes

So i've come across a new problem, I can't keep my feet on the pedals! My Giant Sedona has plastic and rubber pedals now and I have pretty much worn the rubber off. When my shoes get wet they start to slip off. I know they make "clipless" pedals that keep you locked in with special shoes.

My question is, does anyone make a good strong pedal that you can lock in or use with regular athletic shoes? My Sedona is my do everything bike so I really don't want to limit myself to having to put on special shoes to ride it but at the same time when I do take it out on a nasty day I wanna keep my feet on the pedals.

Also any suggestions on wide MTB shoes? I wear a 15/16 mens wide/xwide.
