YMMV but the only shoes I could find that fit my wide feet were higher priced road shoes. I tried on a few different pair at REI and then went to my LBS and bought a pair of Specialized Comp road. As far as pedals before I went clipless I had good luck with a dual purpose spd/ platform pedal like this. My son now has them on his bike, I have Look KEO on my road bike and regular platform on my hybrid.
