No, the Trek 1000C is a road bike for people who like some of the benefits of a road bike, but are more interested in a comfortable ride than getting places. The X01 is
Trek's cyclocross bike. Cyclocross bikes tend to be more pricey than entry level mountain bikes because most cyclocross riders are pretty serious about biking.
As for the Trek 4500, I've had one for 3 years and gotten a great amount of utility out of it. It's main purpose is mountain riding, but I also ride a lot in town, and it serves it's purpose well. I think it, or similar bikes by other brands would be perfect for commuting with a set of 1.5" semi-slick tires.
If you'd like some other options to consider, I would also recommend you look at some of the hybrids like Trek's
FX series or
Specialized Crossroads or Sirrus model lines.
