Well, I wear a 12 EEEE and bought a pair of Nashbar Ragster II sandals - love them, you can go clipless or not with them as the 'plate' is covered.

As for pedals, yup, you can keep buying cheaper pairs of pedals, or if I may offer a suggestion? Crank brothers makes both the Mallet (clipless), and the 50/50 (non-clipless) - both have removable 'set-screws' to grab your shoes, both can be rebuilt if/when parts wear out (rebuild kits are like $14 bucks). I went through three different pairs of 'cheap' pedals (up to $50 bucks cheap) and crushed bushings within months. Have had my Mallet IIs for a bit over 1000 miles and they are still wonderful. Just an idea for you...
