Nope. I rode thousands of miles commuting around 15 MPH door to door and remained embarrassingly slow until I noted that I'd ridden centuries faster than I was covering 100 miles split across 4 separate days and got myself a training program to fix the problem.
You need to ride fast to be fast, where there's some science behind how hard you work for how long and what sort of rest you get so you're fresh enough for your difficult days to be tough.
Ya I know what training is about. I've spent way too much on power meters, supplements, and coaching. I was just trying to suggest that he build some base using his current bike. <shrug>
