I would recommend trying to find a training regimen. It's all about the engine.

If you have $$ to burn, I recommend replacing wheels ($300-500) which may help on climbs and speed (if the hubs/bearings are improved). Wheels can be easily transferred to a better bike when you chose to upgrade. If the wheels don't make you 5 mph faster (they won't), then a lighter bike won't either :-)
