Thanks for the response Timmy. I'll try and get more percise measurments when I get home but when I measured the bottoms of the bars they were about 31.75cm center to center.

I tryed something like to what you suggested to remove the stem already, the problem being that it has a coil thread insert that blocks me from sliding anything in between the clamp. This stem doesn't use a clamp bolt but rather has an inclosed back with threads (insert) cut into it. I'm not the first person to try this as it looks like someone tryed to open it with a screwdriver already. I could try and cut the thread insert but may end up damaging the bars and well that brings me right back here.
