I love the differing of opinions here.
We do spend a bunch of time together and we also enjoy our time apart. It is what keeps us sane I think. Now that the kids are a little older it does afford us some time at home to just relax. Her wanting to give me a ride is not about spending time together. It was more about the fear factor of me riding on "the street" which for some reason she fails to remember that half my ride every day is on the street. As far as I am concerned the only way to let her know I am safe on other streets is to ride other streets and get home safe.
The thing is you have to find what works for you. No two couples are the same. My wife and I enjoy our time apart because outside of work, it's not often. We spend probably 90+% our free time together with our daughter so asking for an extra hour now and then to enjoy some cycling isn't too much to ask.
