In my 20's, I'd be with the ride home camp.

Now in my 50's, I'd take the ride because; she's probably more concerned about your health than you are and wants to know how the appointment went (a good thing), you have the opportunity to tell her that she needn't worry about the extra traffic, but you'd be happy to spend some extra time with her. They seem to love that stuff - until the rules change again.
