I'd be happier if people actually rode them for utilitarian purposes. Cycling's recent increase in popularity has probably had something to do with a certain cancer-surviving cyclist's popularity (one of the top twenty greatest Americans of all time, no less). While I find it encouraging that more people are being active and getting fit (hopefully), it doesn't really help out the environment or society that much until people start using them instead of their cars occassionally.

I'm glad bike companies are getting more money though, because this means they can afford to develop bikes and parts for niche interests (like fixed gear riders, for instance).
