I agree that the hilly walking is a good alternative during the convalescence. In fact some moderate hiking might suit you even better. Mohonk and Minnewaska have miles of great trails that include lots of rock climbing to varying degrees, and will keep you in good condition until you can get back on the bike. You can bring the pup and walk till your legs fall off if you like.
Mohonk schmohonk, I have great hiking right out my back door or a 3-4 mile drive from my house. Thousands of acres. One of the benefits of residing in lower bumfark.
