They did the damage. They're completely responsible for restoring it to the condition it was in prior to the damage...no if, ands, or buts. I would get an estimate for the repair, present it to him, and, if he doesn't respond favorably, take him to small claims court. This kind of stuff makes me very angry.
He ABSOLUTELY should have stepped to the plate as soon as he found out!!!
^^^ What he said. Don't worry if you feel nitpicky, you gave him something of yours, and you should expect it back in the exact same condition. And if he doesn't seem to care, make him care.
