Should I:
Buy a used wheelset: 32H Kinlin NB-R Rims laced with Hoshi spokes to novatec low flange hubs. For $285 shipped.
or,
Build my own: 32H A23 laced to a low flange miche primato in the rear, and a 24H A23 laced to a circus monkey road hub in the front. For around $360 shipped.
For the wheelset I'd be building, I'll have to wait for the A23's to get stocked again before I can start on it. Additionally, I have never built a wheelset before, nor do I have a truing stand (nor have I ever trued a wheelset for that matter). So, I'd kind of be riding blind with internet tutorials, and using a few pieces of DIY equipment. Would probably have to take it to a shop and get them to check that its true and tensioned properly.
For the used wheelset, I'm told the hubs still spin well, and that the wheels function perfectly. but I'm ordering it, so I don't have the ability to check it out beyond pictures. It does end up being about $75 cheaper too, which is a pretty big deal for a pretty-broke college kid. I think this wheelset will end up being the same weight, if not a little lighter. The downside is that I don't get the added ride quality of the 23mm wide rims.
Thoughts?
