I'm moving to Chicago from Detroit in a couple of weeks and am thinking of starting to wear a helmet but I hate most helmets and kind of agree with the people that say helmet test results are bogus and if you're in a bad enough crash a helmet won't save you. I figure a leather one is a nice compromise because it will prevent you from getting road rash on your head if you have a minor collision with the ground.
While stylish, I would get a real helmet. They've saved me numerous times. When you see your helmet split down the middle and you know it would have been your head, you appreciated it. Not trying to turn this into a helmet vs. no helmet debate, wear it or don't based on your own assessment of risk.
