Absolutely no serious issue. There's plenty of hub clearance on the left side, so go ahead and do that. The only issue is a bit of a safety factor, in that if the stays get loose, they're slightly more likely to fall into the wheel. This isn't day and night because loose stays mounted outside dropouts also slip and jam the wheels, so the key to to make sure the bolt stays reliably tight.
