In car-infested south Florida, I found midnight riding's the only way to go. I have the road practically to myself. The few cars I do meet give me wide berth (I have a superflash blinky in back and a one-watt Blaze up front, both in steady mode when night riding).
Much easier to see cars in the mirror -- but only if they're running with lights on.
The only negatives are.. no sun so now I'm even paler than normal and bugs seem to just love the Blaze's light -- they make a beeline for it. Trying to adjust my sleep cycle so I can sneak in an hour or two of riding before work every now and then -- to get some skin color. Some sun IS good for you, we weren't wired to be in vampire mode. Oh, and watch out for the 90 year olds in their Lincolns and Camrys. They're far worse than the drunks, I think!
So much more relaxing, even when working the bike harder. I feel safer, too, what with the lack of cagers..
My only problem with night riding, is unexpected road conditions, unless you generally know the road conditions before you come upon a trouble spot.
