Sure, I could have bought a Barfly for $35+, or wait another 5 years for K-Edge to catch up so I can buy one of those for like $45. Instead, I went to my bike shop, and picked up 2 of the Bontrager Adjustable Computer Mounts (Bontrager item #424838) for $20/ea (some shops have them for like $16-18, of course I got a deal, so I paid $30 for both).
I used a flat head screw instead of the one that comes with the mount, a little lock tite, and a rubber band from my original Garmin mounts. Oh, and of course the original Garmin mount. In the Garmin mount this is a small dimple in the center. I drilled that out to the exact diameter of the dimple, large enough for the screw to pass through. Add some lock tite, and screwed it in. Then used the rubber band as a backup safety doo-hicky.
It is very secure and sturdy. Can't beat that, I built one for my road bike and one for my cross bike for the price of a Barfly. Looks good and works and only 5 minutes of work time to complete both of them.
