Honestly though, regular jobs provide: $$ (I make double what my non-cubicle-dwelling friends do), normal hours/weekends off, and it doesn't destroy my body (I have chronic repetitive stress injury in my shoulders from years of food service/barista/whatever jobs in my youth). As much as I loved and felt more fulfilled by service industry jobs, and think they are a great fit for my personality and skills, I can't handle living paycheck to paycheck and my body can't handle the manual labor part, even more so as I get older.
ETA: Sometimes I do think I'd like to own my own bar, even though I know what a horrible failure it would probably be.
oh yes you make plenty of good points. The big picture is where I need to focus.
