i recently bought a pair of these on ebay, and even before i've mounted them, they're giving me fits. one clip is broken, the clips are a size too big ('L'), replacement clips are very difficult to find, and i mangled the dust caps last night trying to overhaul them. when i finally did remove the cap on one of them, the axle nut was seized on the axle, and i almost broke my socket wrench trying to remove it. the nut finally did give, and i'm in the process of completing the overhaul, but i wish i had passed on this auction. don't get high while bidding, people. it's just not safe.

i thought i had run into great luck today looking for an axle nut and two lock washers for the pedals. i went to the hardware store without luck. then went to one lbs with the same outcome. then i went to another lbs looking for these little items when one of the mechanics said he had some 600 pedals and clips for $10. what luck! got 'em home and found out the clips are even bigger ('LL') than the one good one i have. and they shouldn't say 'LL,' but 'goliath' or something biblical. so now i have four pedals and no medium clips. gra.

sorry, i had to get all that off my chest. so ... they're not really platform pedals, even though they look like it. there is a fore and aft raised part of the pedal that hits the sole before the lower part of the pedal. they're really quill pedals, which is unfortunate, because i wear old school sneakers (ontisuka tiger mexico 66s). so the news just gets worse. like you, i'd like to know if cyclists wear similar sneakers with these 600 pedals.

if looking for a true platform pedal, i really like the 'city' and 'touring' pedals from velo orange. you can get these same vo pedals online from other retailers as well and save a few bucks. check outside outfitters and universal cycles.

about removing the caps ... there are two notches you should use to pry with an instrument, like a thin, wide screwdriver. the notches are on opposite sides of each other. i read on the forum that someone used tooth floss around the whole cap after raising them a bit via the notches. someone also posted that removing the gasket first is helpful (if you can get it off). i'm going to attempt to overhaul the second pair i bought today, and hopefully i'll do a better job on the caps than the mangled ones from last night. i spray painted those caps black. they should look good after i sand them down and spray them again.

good luck, and let me know how it goes.

and if anyone has two 'M' sized clips [wink wink, nudge nudge] ...
