(Possible as sometimes wild position changes get reacted to and it is the 3rd or 4th rider to dodge that finally clips a wheel, but not all that likely or at the time obvious).
EDIT:
Looks like I remembered it wrong, they were pretty clsoe to one side, I'm so used to the narrow roads that it just seemed centered.
Found this video and it looks like a Sky rider was next to the first guy to go down, so Sky may well ahve caused the crash.
If so that totally changes taking advantage of the situation.

Looking at the video I think your initial impression was correct, Keith. The crash happened at the side of the road, yes, but the peloton was spread all over the road and the bulk of the Sky team was at the front and about eight feet from the roadside. There was plenty of room. I can't tell from the video who caused the crash, but it doesn't look as if anyone is being slammed into the gutter.
On the Eurosport coverage of yesterday's extremely dull stage they were saying that the Spanish press had canvassed the views of eight or nine old pros, all Spanish, on whether Sky should have waited. All but one of them said no. Just more opinions, of course, but interesting.
