Now I am thinking did I make a really big mistake here!

3 months ago I started to ride again and got a 2012 Specialized Allez Sport to ride recreationally on weekends mostly in the park.

Thought that having proper cycling gear will give a better comfortable ride, but now with all those falling stories I might just return both those items.

I am in the entry level stage of riding, so maybe I should keep it that way until I get very comfortable with my riding, especially with a road bike.

Guess I jumped the gun too fast with the pedals and clipless shoes!
Nah!!! I bought clipless when I got my first decent bike, a base specialized allez. I fell once when my MP3 player hit the ground. It was after work around 11pm on the sidewalk(bike lane gets scooped into the sidewalk at this point because of the "steep grade". I was tired, didn't think, panic braked to my mp3 player wouldn't drag or get caught in my wheels. I stopped, tried to put my foot down, and over I went! There was a car maybe 20 feet in front of me in the inside lane that stopped. I was surprised they saw me, but that just bruised the ego a bit more . I wasn't hurt, and when I popped back up and swung my leg over the bike, they drove off.

I also very nearly fell going up the steeper part of that hill after work. Decided to walk it, and stopped before I unclipped, and my COG went to the wrong side. Caught that one though.

When I crashed leaving my house trying to take a right turn with an unnoticed flat front tire(just woke up, pretty much asleep still) it bent my derailleur hanger. Later on, i shifted into my smallest rings, I hear CLACK FWIP *****! and my rear wheel locks up. suprised me, but I didnt fall there either(RD caught in the spokes).

But no, You will love clipless once you get used to them. Once clipped in, you just press on the pedal and go! You never worry about foot placement etc. High cadences are much easier. Out of saddle accelerations and climbing are much easier because you can pull up on one pedal, and push down on the other at the same time. This makes getting up to speed VERY easy through intersections.

OTOH, I bought a cheap commuter bike to lock up, and if it gets stolen, meh. It has platform pedals. Havent ridden plats in almost 2 years. I've almost wrecked 2x because of them. Usually too high a cadence, and trying to push forward at the top of the pedal stroke. foot slips off, followed quickly by the other foot. induces a nasty wobble. worse when you have 1 hand trying to shift the DT shifters! What makes them worse is that theyre 1 sided platforms!!! WTH is that! one side you have the platform, other side you're standing on the slippery pedal spindle! also, they aren't weighted like the SPD SL's, that sit kindly offering you the loop. they sit completely upside down. Try to flip them over, and the very front of your shoe is at the front of the pedal, so you're standing on your toes! at that point they catch your shoe tread so it's difficult to adjust. Also, I only weigh 135 so standing on the pedal doesn't get me very far, so getting through an intersection is much tougher. Especially in the left turn lane. Clipless, it isn't hard to accelerate as fast as cars. Platforms and I'm lucky to be doing 12mph hitting the opposite crosswalk. I'm really considering buying some SPD SLs for my commuter, but it cost $100 for the bike. IDC, steal the bike. but with 105 SL's on there it becomes Steal the bike but PLEASE leave the pedals!
