I drink water.
I don't use any kind of gel or goo when I ride. If I burn all my available calories, I stop at a seedy convenience store and buy something.
I recover with chocolate milk boxes from Costco.
For longer rides I stop at a seedy convenience store and buy a snack.
I buy don't wear special socks. Most of the time I don't wear special pants or jerseys.
I buy threaded CO2 cartridges online for about a buck a piece. I also get flat resistant tires so I don't get flats. Much.
I patch my tubes (usually not on the road, I carry them home and patch several at once).
I don't use chain lube much. A bottle lasts a long time. But then again, my largest cassette is 7 speeds, so I can still use durable chains and don't sweat it too much.
I don't clean my chain. (See above.)
If I clean my bike, I use Pledge spray wax.
I ride vintage bikes. Replacement parts are available at commodity prices (i.e., they're not high tech).
Cheers!
