My anecdote: ;-)
My body performs better with an empty stomach. Weekdays rides 20-40 milers and weekends 50-60. Plain water, add electrolytes when humid or high temps (sweat a lot). I've found that i can go 60-80 miles on water and electrolytes only. However, the following day i feel drained. If i'm going past 60 miles and begin eating , even not hungry, at mile 40-45 (half banana every hour or so), I do not feel nearly as tired the following day and sometimes fresh enough to do another ride in similar length.
I like fruits: bananas/berries/apples/oranges/etc; they're a bit cumbersome to carry (i use transparent wrap and/or zippy bags, never had a problem), but they taste great and my stomach doesn't complain at all. I carry a gel in my pocket, just in case, have to check the exp. date because i never eat that stuff.
No pun intended but i cannot imagine getting a burger mid ride. In my mind it wouldn't feel any different to letting Barry Bonds bat practice with my belly button. At the end of the ride is another story (post ride weekend BBQ recovery is a summer must).
I also get the general sense ( reading posts in this forum) that people over calculate their energy intake for their rides as described. But hey, what would this place be if all anecdotes were similar??
