Getting back up to speed with the new bike...

After riding for one week I finally matched my normal upper-end commute time of 45 min. that I'd been seeing on my 9.7 mile comute with my old Specialized Globe Carmel 3 comfort bike. The comfort bike is really in need of servicing/parts as I put 12,000 miles on its drive train. I have only converted from being a masher to a spinner a month or less before I bought my new bike.

I'd been spinning using the 48 chain-ring and middle rear gears on my 3*7. Now I'm using 32 chain-ring and the middle rear gears on my new bike which has 3*8 drive-train.

My new bike is a Raleigh Talus 29er and I'm hoping that when my Schwalbe 700 x 38 Marathon Plus tires are on the bike I can return to spinning using the larger ring which has 42 teeth. Currently has knobby Geax AKA, 29 x 2.2 tires and they seem to have a lot of rolling resistance.

Can I expect to increase my speed with the skinnier street tires?
