I think they did, in the opening scene it looked like he was in a pretty easy gear (small-looking chainring to me) but later it looked more normal sized. Then again changing the chainring is a stupid way to adjust gearing compared to changing the cog so maybe it was just me. Also no worries about spoiling the plot, cc700 has like THE major spoiler in his post. I'm glad I stayed away from this thread until after I saw it.
Anyway, I LOVED it but I didn't think it was a good movie, if that makes any sense. It was exactly what it needed to be - it was way overwrought/took itself too seriously in parts, but also was tongue-in-cheek and laughed at itself in other parts. It had GAPING plot holes. It had lots of shout-outs to bike kids. (like JGL and other dude racing in the park and blowing by the pack of roadie/freds. I LOLed.) The only part I hated was use of the term "flash mob" i mean COME ON you couldn't think of a less lame word/phrase to use to rally the kids?
I would recommend seeing it with a group of friends/pack of bike kids cause it's definitely a movie that benefits from some audience feedback. I saw the 8:00 showing and considered staying for the 10:40 one because I knew there was an alleycat that was ending at the theater for the later showing and it would have been fun to see with more bike kids in the theater. That said, the friends I went with ride bikes but are not bike kids per se and they still totally enjoyed it.
Stay past the first batch of credits, they show JGL bloodied for real after smashing through a cab window.
It will make some kids take off their brakes which is stupid, and it made me want to learn to skid which is also stupid.
